The Spanish artist, Iñigo Navarro Dávila (1977), of Madrid, paints in a classic figurative style – evoking the essence of the grand masters of painting - and surprises by adding a postmodernist, darkly humoristic twist with his unhinged, surrealistic motives. On his work and his inspiration is relates:
"My feelings about Art in general are much indebted to the great classical masterpieces. I could almost say, without exaggerating, that I was raised in the corridors of the Prado Museum, my mom being an active member of the institution, and I have visited the Goya and Velazquez wings an infinite amount of times.
Over the years, I have pondered about why and what I, as an artist, could contribute with to the larger world of Art. At this stage in my professional development, or so it seems, I have acquired a comfortable balance between artistic technique, conceptual investigation, narrative depth, and an underlying sense of humour in all of my present work.
There are presently several work series in which I am deeply involved. In each one of them, I emphatically try to heighten, at least, one of the aspects mentioned above, but it is when viewing the entire oeuvre in unison that one identifies the collective Kunstistic effort. In retrospect, each work individually represents a piece within a grander message to be delivered."
He strives to create narratives that are universal by using the anecdotal to highlight the exceptional, his view being that the rarity of the conditions should be purely anecdotal.
On his creative process, he further relates:
"…My imagination takes flight and things start to happen . Everyone knows it's better to die on a magnificent property of Sant Cugat del Valles than in a suburb of Paris. Inhabiting the ideas of others is creating one of the most controversial issues of our contemporaneity. If they find the Swamp Thing mowing the lawn on a Sunday morning, ask him what he thinks anout Marcel Duchamp or Sunday's game."
