JORAM ROUKES | MOZAÏEK

TELMO MIEL | EXQUISITE WASTE OF TIME

23 April - 1 May

OUT IN THE OPEN 2019

Ready for the fifth edition of “Out in the Open” we are very happy to open Out in The Open 2019 with 3 stellar artists who just arrived in Aalborg.
For the next weeks Telmo Miel and Joram Roukes will be working on 2 large murals downtown Aalborg besides opening a double solo show at the gallery.

JORAM ROUKES | MOZAÏEK

At the studio Joram Roukes has been working hard to be able to present a brand new expression in Aalborg.
After having painted fresh oil paintings for the entire exhibition, subsequently he cut these into small parts to put them together again in fragmented mosaics.

About the show Roukes tells the following:

"The initial idea for MOZAÏEK formed about three years ago on a vacation in Thailand. In a taxi in Bangkok I remember seeing gigantic billboards that seemed to have been made up of a large number of big painted or printed panels. For each new advertisement, the panels looked to have been painted over with traces of old imagery still visible. Resulting in a patchwork-like composition. These visuals stuck with me. I imagined what a grid-based re-assembled patchwork painting of my images would turn out like and decided to give that approach a rather blind trial. Thus painting an entire body of new works with little to no exploratory studies and no strict ideas other than to have certain compositions recur to create cohesive new ones. Then cut these paintings into 12 z 12” squares to scramble and mix them into new works.
These patchwork, mosaic-style paintings are a new take on collage-like defragmentation in an ongoing experiment on where the boundaries of visual and associative recognition lie."

TELMO MIEL |EXQUISITE WASTE OF TIME

In the same way as Joram Roukes, Temo Miel also presents a new solo show at the gallery questioning whether our constant impatience and desire for everything to go really fast, at the end leads to something better.

The artists describe it as follows:

"Every loss of minutes feels as a waste.
Feelings aren’t always correct.
Sometimes I find myself worrying about the driver in front of
me doing 100 while he’s allowed to do 130. Or people standing
in front of the entrance of a store not knowing to go left or right.
Annoying as that can be, I always remind myself to take a breath
because haste is often egocentric.
We love efficiency, because time is short.
But short does not mean it’s worse than less short.. More time
does not mean better time.
So let’s keep this short and sweet, so it doesn’t feel as a waste.
Let’s just try to make any waste of time feel like an exquisite one."
