It is a great pleasure we're now able to open the largest group exhibition of the year with a total of 10 leading international urban artists.
Many of the these have visited KIRK Gallery in the recent years to participate in the mural project 'Out in the Open'.
With the opening of the new show you'll now be able to explore their indoor work as well.
For many of the exhibiting artists working on panel or canvas was their starting point, which later on developed to outdoor walls as well.
We are therefore looking very much forward to showcasing their works on the gallery walls as well, welcoming 10 highly profiled international artists from the uppermost top shelf of New Contemporary.
IAN FRANCIS
As one of the new artists exhibiting at the gallery you'll find British Ian Francis.
Highly detailed, Ian Francis’ art is a mixture of abstraction and figuration, composed from the elements of both painting and drawing.
Multi-layered and highly contrasted, Ian Francis’ paintings generate a feeling of a seemingly multi-dimensional platform, with blackness and empty space surrounding the portrayed scenes and characters.
As a mixed media artist, the artist uses a range of mediums – from acrylic and oil to charcoal and ink – to create his distinctly contemporary works.
Although he predominantly uses oil on canvas, Ian Francis favors the catch-all nature of mixed media as a description for his process.
At the show you’ll find brand new works by the artist.
VHILS
Secondly you'll be a ble to explore the work of Portuguese Vhils a little further, after he just carved a mural in Aalborg.
Alexandre Farto aka Vhils (b. 1987) began to interact with the urban environment through the practice of graffiti in the early 2000.
Today Vhils is known throughout the world for a very special technique in which he based on his aesthetics of vandalism, destroys as a means to create. He carves, cuts, drills, etches and blasts his way through the layers of materials. Yet, like an archaeologist, he removes in order to expose, bringing to light the beauty that lies trapped beneath the surface of things.
His poignant, poetic portraits chiselled into flaking walls can be seen adorning cityscapes around the world.
SETH
Also French Seth, has just completed two large murals in Aalborg, and will exhibit unique works at the gallery for the first time.
Born in Paris in 1972, Seth Globepainter (Julien Malland) began to express himself on walls in the mid-90s.
During the years Seth has affirmed his name as one top artist in the field continuing to create childhood-inspired interventions around Paris and the world.
After intensively traveling to over fifty countries during the last two decades, Seth is very much aware of the way globalization and modernization are influencing local traditions.
About his work he tells the following:
“I almost always use children in my work, since through the child I can talk to everybody who will all understand.
My work is about talking to the inner child inside each and every one of us. Sweetness and innocence from childhood regularly contrasts with the chaotic environments I choose to put them in”.
We are all able to relate to children, and travelling around the world there are always children playing”.
BEZT
Bezt's work is already loved by many citizens in Aalborg because of his large mural 'Meeting her Parents', where a boy standing with a bouquet of flowers on his back, which already has been half-eaten by a rat, nervously waiting in front of the door of the home of his parents-in-law.
Like on the mural the themes in the work of Bezt, are often full of contrasts. Beauty versus ugliness, order versus disorder ..
At the same time Bezt workbbridges the gap between fine- and urban art, visually, technically and concept wise, often with conflicting issues on his mind.
Bezt was born in Turek in 1987, Poland, and graduated of Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz.
HERAKUT
Furthermore you'll be able to experience some stunning new pieces from the German duo Herakut at the show, who created Aalborg's largest mural (50 m long) "Your Stories make me forget those Prison Bars".
In a narrative imagery, the horizon expands at ‘Godsbanen’ in Aalborg and leads us for a moment to new dream worlds.
It is very characteristic for the artist's work, that Hera's sensual and at the same time rough line is the frame of proportion and form, while Akut adds the photorealistic elements.
Whereas Hera is a classically trained painter and works with a large mix of media, Akut is audidact and works only with spray.
In the intersection between the two talents, these two artists have created a distinct expression that, today, is known in the streets and alleyways world over.
Last but not least, we are very much looking forward to showcasing the American abstract artist Augustine Kofie and Australian Joshua Smith, who, together with Bezt, have created a truly unique artwork by virtue of a miniature sculpture built in the smallest details, of a building in Lodz, Poland, where Bezt has painted many murals.
