Born in Norway (1980), Anders Gjennestad’ artistic topic is the kinetic energy of people and the laws of gravity. His impactful works first popped up in the early 2000s.
Referencing his own photographs of people in motion, Gjennestad explores the fragmentation of narratives and frozen moments, complementing them with tactile textures of worn walls and materials, using spray paint and meticulous multi-layer stencils.
Black and white figures run on outdoor walls and on canvases, and recycled materials, dragging long shadows. A perspective game that disorients our gaze, accustomed to wandering between empty and predictable inputs.
Gjennestad’ photorealistic images with depth and complex details, live lives parallel to ours, ignoring us from their perpendicular world. They interact with their space, shared with us from an alternative perspective, and one cannot help wondering what the world is like from their point of view.
His works reminiscence how as a child, lying on the sofa with the head hanging, fixating the roof of the room, the doors, the paintings, the chandelier, trying to walk with fantasy in a reality made of reversed physical laws and words said backwards.
Gjennestad’ theme creates subjects that seem to inhabit an alternative universe, where there are no familiar laws of physics, giving each character a unique ability to interact with space and the viewer.
Anders Gjennestad has exhibited and carried out projects internationally. He lives and works in Berlin.
